Institutionalizing Diversity in the Workplace
Basic diversity training can help individuals in an agency relate to one
another but the next stage is institutionalizing diversity so that it is more than
a one-time training. Co-workers need to understand that diversity training is
not about meeting government legal requirements or being "politically
correct"-its about best practices for long-term success. The goal of quality
diversity training is to make diversity an integral part of daily decision making
and practice. This training uses visual diagramming techniques to help
participants incorporate diversity in their daily activities and conduct
long-term planning. This training also adds in creating institutional memory
concerning outreach contacts and diversity issues. This is a follow-up class
to the basic cultural competency class.
